PostSubject: Battle of Wills   Battle of Wills EmptyMon Mar 22, 2010 1:27 am

This is the fanfic that I wrote for the deatheaterfest:

Title: Battle of Wills
Author: aleysiasnape
Pairing: Severus/Hermione
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: AUish, plot before porn
Word Count: 4,153
Summary: I picked the Snape/Hermione pairing because I am more familiar writing them. And I choose the prompt of someone is trying to convince the other someone not to be on the Dark Side- but in an atypical way.
Notes: I hope my recipient likes the story! Many thanks goes to my beta, Songquake.

Battle of Wills

Prologue:

Headmaster Snape desperately needed Hermione Granger back at Hogwarts. I really need Miss Granger here, with me, to help me with Potions. I am overloaded as it is, and the Dark Lord is asking me to recruit Miss Granger to our side... she'll never agree to it. He stared at the sleeping portrait of Dumbledore, who had previously given him the information that the three of them, Hermione, Potter, and Ron, were chasing after Horcruxes. Of all the silly things to do, when she could be here, helping me. Instead she’s out there following those two imbeciles around.

The Dark Lord had instructed Severus to persuade Miss Granger to join their side by any means necessary. He would have had Lucius Malfoy do it, but Lucius was in Azkaban. Severus hated to think what would have happened to her if Hermione wound up in his hands or in the hands of the Carrows. He was her best bet for remaining safe.

He chose an owl familiar to Hermione. “Seek out Miss Granger, and do not come back without an answer.” The owl hooted and flew off. He headed back to his office, poured himself a glass of Firewhiskey, and waited.

~*~

Hermione was getting frustrated. She had specifically told Ron and Harry where the Horcruxes were. She let out an exasperated grunt as she kicked the ground, wanting to be anywhere but with those two. She felt they were only using her for her brains. She knew she could be doing something better than babysitting them.

She heard an owl hooting and saw it flying towards her. Now why is an owl flying… Her thoughts died off as the owl perched close to her and she noticed the letter attached to its leg.

Curiously, she retrieved the letter and opened it.

Miss Granger,

I’m in desperate need of your help. I know the three of you are hunting Horcruxes and you are in danger. I can protect you here, at the castle, if you are willing to become my Potions Assistant. Please respond using this owl.

Yours,
Severus Snape
Headmaster of Hogwarts

“Why on earth would Professor Snape need me?” she murmured as she reread the letter and paced a bit before making her decision. “After all this time, he decides to apprentice me in Potions? Hell yes, I’ll take it!” she shouted, knowing that this was what she needed to do: spy on the other side and persuade Headmaster Snape to switch over to the Light. She quickly pulled out parchment and ink and wrote a quick answer, then attached it to the owl. “Take this back to Headmaster Snape,” she spoke softly. The owl hooted and flew off, back to the castle.

Severus waited patiently for Miss Granger to reply. She was his only option if he was to survive in this war. He knew that she knew he was a double agent, but the question remained, how much did she know? He grumbled to himself, knowing the trap that he had fallen into, and that if she didn't agree to help him, You-Know-Who would become very volatile. He paced, glancing at the open window for any sign of the owl. Of course, he would have to hide his own feelings for her until after they completed this mission. He sighed in relief when he recognized the owl flying towards the window. “About damn time,” he muttered to himself as he retrieved the letter and fed the owl a treat.

He tore the letter open and sighed out loud, relieved that she had agreed to come back and work with him. He created a Portkey, wrote a short note to her and attached both to the owl’s leg. “Fly back to Hermione Granger,” he instructed the owl sternly.

~*~

Hermione paced back and forth, looking up frequently for the owl’s return. She knew she had to try to convince Severus to stay on the Light. She had a feeling that he’d been playing both sides for so long that it had become hard to choose. She remembered all those nightly meetings at the Order she had seen him at, leaving quickly. She breathed a sigh of relief at the owl’s return.

She had already sent another owl to Ron and Harry, telling them that she had found a task that would be more helpful to them in their discoveries. She just hoped that they would buy it.

She quickly read the letter and activated the Portkey. Much to her surprise, she landed in the Headmaster’s office.

Severus rose from his desk thinking, Finally. “Miss Granger, I offer you protection here from the Death Eaters and the Dark Lord if you accept this Potions position. You will, naturally, have access to my library to do research. And you will, of course, stay with me in my rooms for protection.” A slight smile came to his face when he noticed her confused look.

“I-I will have to sleep with you, sir?”

“Oh no, I have had an extra bed put in. You will be safe from the Carrows and, Bellatrix. They have been informed of your arrival through the Dark Lord. And he gave them strict instructions not to harm you unless it’s necessary,” he purred as he advanced towards her, staring her down.

Hermione gulped, knowing it would be a battle of wills between them: she wanting to convert him back to the Light, and he wanting her to join him on the Dark side. She was practically sweating when he came nearer to her. Will he send me away or lock me up?

“Your thoughts betray you, my dear. I know you are curious as to why I did what I did. All will be revealed to you in due course. Do you accept?”

“Y-yes. I accept your offer,” Hermione replied, shaking as she reached for Severus’ hand. She noticed the spark when they touched as he helped her stand. She looked at his face to see if he had noticed the connection between them. But alas, he kept his face neutral, not showing any emotions at all as he escorted her to his – correction, their – rooms.

Once she was settled in, Hermione and Severus quickly became comfortable working around one another. And much to their surprise, they found they had a lot of interests in common. Severus was surprised that in addition to Potions, she was interested in learning more about the Dark Arts.

Hermione was working on an anti-venom potion for him when he strolled into the lab. She placed a stasis spell on the potion as she glanced up, noticing the worried look on his face.

“Professor, what’s wrong? Is there anything I can do?”

He sighed. “I’m supposed to be getting information from you, Hermione. Information about the Order, what their next plan of attack is supposed to be. The Dark Lord is not pleased with me right now. And well, you know how he likes to take it out on those who fail him.”

Hermione shuddered, remembering the night she saw Severus at Grimmauld Place, as he Apparated back, still fighting the affects of the Cruciatius curse. She knew that he was supposed to lure her to the other side and she was at a loss.

“Miss Granger? Miss Granger?” Severus asked worriedly as he touched her shoulder, bringing her out of her memory.

“I’m fine. Just remembering something, that’s all. Of course I’ll help you,” she murmured as slid her hand on his shoulders. They had been working together for three months now and felt comfortable around each other.

Once she did that, she felt him calm down a bit and wrap his arms around her. Yet Severus knew that if he didn’t get information from her soon, the Carrows would take over.

“Hermione, I must insist you give me false information. I have covered my tracks that way…”

Hermione looked horrified. “Severus! Someone could have bugged the room! We could be killed.”

“I have taken precautions. There are no portraits housed within these labs to report back to the others. But if I don’t get any information from you soon, the Carrows will have to step in.”

“No!” Hermione wailed softly as she burrowed her face in her hands. She did not want to be taken away from him. Not when she was so close, knowing that he was still on their side.

“Listen to me, Hermione. What I’m going to do is not going to be pleasant. I can invade your mind and take the information from you. But I’m willing to let you give it to me freely. I’ll just have to come up with some false information for the Dark Lord.”

“No! That will never work…” Her voice trailed off feeling the tension between them as he stared into her eyes before his lips came crashing down on hers.

Severus broke the kiss when he felt like they were getting too close. “Hermione, I’m doing all that I can to protect you. Do you trust me?”

“Yes, Severus, I do.”

~*~

Severus and Hermione plotted against the Dark Lord in their quarters. Hermione had come up with a suitable plan to appease him without getting Severus tortured or worse, killed. She knew they had made their feelings known to one another through the kiss they shared.

Since he was still playing a loyal Death Eater, he had to obey the Dark Lord at all times. He brought an empty Pensieve to her and requested that she place the false memories in it.

Once done, she went to the bathroom to relax. The Headmaster's bathroom had a sunken tub; she eased herself into the warm, bubbly water. Sighing softly, Hermione remembered that she had bottled the anti-venom potion for Severus, just in case. I’ll have to inform him about that, she mused as she lazily circled the water with her finger. Her eyes were closed and she was deep in thought, and therefore was caught off guard when a familiar presence joined her in the tub.

“I hope you don’t mind, Hermione?” Severus asked huskily as he stretched out, letting the warm water relax him.

Hermione blinked a couple of times staring at Severus, surprised that he used her first name and he wanted to share a bath with her.

“No, Severus,” she breathed nervously, then thought of something. “Do you want me to give you a massage?” Her heart beat a little faster as he slowly made his way over to her.

He turned around, letting her access his shoulders and back. “My, you are tense!” she murmured as she started massaging him gently.

“Don’t hold back, Hermione,” he groaned softly, wondering who was seducing whom here.

“I never believed that you had betrayed the Order,” Hermione said after a moment of silence, needing him to know that she believed in him. “You were just following orders from Professor Dumbledore. I still trust in you, Severus, to do the right thing,” she whispered softly in his ear.

He sighed, wondering if he should tell her about Minerva. “You do know that Minerva is in hiding because of me?” he spoke regretfully about losing his friend and colleague.

“She believes that you are guilty?” Hermione gasped softly, not wanting to doubt her beloved Transfiguration teacher and Head of House.

“Yes, she does. She told me so in the letter that she left. If only I could tell her that Albus was already dying. He pleaded with me to kill him, but I didn’t want to do it. Draco couldn’t do it, either,” he whispered softly back to her.

“Harry told me what happened on the Astronomy Tower. Draco didn’t have it in him.”

“I’m touched, Hermione, that you are concerned for him after what he had called you. I for one would not show him sympathy.”

“It’s this damned war. It’s put us on opposite sides when we could be getting along!”

“You know, you could be an excellent Minister for Magic,” Severus murmured sleepily as he rose out of the water, naked.

Hermione blushed, noticing his erection as he dried off before wrapping the towel around his waist. “Are you going to join me in bed, Hermione? We don’t have to do anything. We can simply talk.”

Hermione rose out of the water and heard Severus’ intake of breath. His eyes traveled her body as she dried herself off before wrapping the towel around herself.

Sleep overcame them once they got in bed; neither of them had realized how tired they were. Hermione snuggled up close to Severus as she drifted off to sleep.

Several hours later, Severus heard pounding on his doors. He grumbled irately as he rose out of bed, putting a house coat on. “This had better be good! Otherwise there will be points deducted!” He glanced back at the bed, seeing Hermione still sleeping peacefully. He pulled the covers up over her, making sure she was warm enough before answering the door.

“Who is it at this ungodly hour?” he bellowed as he yanked the door open to reveal a worried looking Draco with a disheveled Lucius Malfoy leaning on his son for support.

Severus counted to ten in his head at seeing the Malfoys at his door. “Draco, what is going on? And why are you out of bed at this hour? Why is your father with you?” he demanded, his hands on his hips.

“Uncle Severus, please let us in! Father has escaped from Azkaban Prison. He is only concerned about me. Father is hurt,” Draco pleaded as he tried to hold his father steady.

Severus sighed, knowing that he would have to keep Hermione out of the sight of those two. "If they knew that I had Miss Granger in my bedroom, they would not let me hear the end of it. Oh, but it was going so well, and she wanted to take it slow. Or was that I? I am not letting those two near my Hermione,” he fretted as he allowed them entrance.

He led them to the guest bedroom and Draco laid a groaning Lucius on the bed. Severus gathered several potions and did some healing spells on his friend before instructing Draco on how to give the potions to his father.

“How did he escape, Draco?”

“He didn’t give too much detail about his escape. Only that he Apparated here, worried about my safety. And that the Dark Lord did not try to get him out of Azkaban so he had to get out himself. But aren’t you going to stay?” Draco pouted a bit.

“Now son, we wouldn’t want to worry Severus too much. Be thankful that he did this for us. Although I do need to contact your mother,” Lucius hinted.

“No. That will give your position away to the Ministry and I, for one, would not be thrilled to be locked up in Azkaban. As soon as you are healed and get your strength back, Draco will take you back to the Manor,” Severus instructed them both as he swept out of the guest bedroom.

“Draco, do you know what that was that all about? He must have someone important staying with him to act like that,” Lucius mused as he eased himself back on the pillows.

“Rest, Father. I’ll be here,” Draco murmured as he sat in the high-backed chair, placing a coverlet over his legs.

Severus entered his bedroom, pinching the bridge of his nose as he felt a huge headache coming. “How am I going to deal with this situation?” he muttered, not knowing that Hermione was awake and watching him.

“Severus? Who was…” Her voice drifted off to silence as he hushed her. He strengthened his wards and Silenced the room before undressing and coming back to bed.

“Things have changed, Hermione. Lucius has somehow escaped, and Draco brought him here, of all places!” He felt arms wrap around him, consoling him.

“I’m here for you, Severus. Just tell me what to do,” Hermione begged as she kissed his neck.

“You do not know what you are asking for!” he hissed softly as her fingers slowly traveled down his body.

“Oh but I do, Severus. And I want you so bad. Do you want me, Severus?”

Severus turned his head around and saw the desire in Hermione’s eyes. He bent down and kissed her on the lips. Breaking the kiss, he continued, “Any more, and I do not think I could control myself tonight.”

“But Severus…,” she whined as she pulled him closer for another kiss.

“Hermione, are you insinuating that you want me to be…” His voice trailed off as a hand cupped his erection. After breaking the kiss he finished the sentence, “To make love to you?”

Hermione breathed in his ear, “Yes!”

“No! Not tonight. Later,” he murmured as he eased her off himself. “Draco and Lucius are in the other room, and first we’ll have to figure out what to do about them. Soon.”

He kissed her temple before lowering himself onto the bed and stroking her hair as she fell asleep again.

While Hermione slept curled against his side, Severus was wide awake, pondering what to do. It’s not going to be easy trying to convince her that I have never betrayed the Order. And it’s not going to be easy to try to convince her to come to You-Know-Who’s side, either. Especially since he knows that she is the brightest witch of our age, he thought miserably as sleep overcame him.

Morning came too quickly for Severus, who tried his best to ignore a rather hard erection. Groaning softly and moving quickly so as not to disturb Hermione, he took a cold shower. Dressing swiftly, he left her in bed to check up on Draco and Lucius.

Lucius was up, resting comfortably in bed, eating breakfast when Severus stormed in. “Well good morning to you, too, Severus.”

“Where the hell is Draco?” Severus hissed irately. He was responsible for the boy’s whereabouts and was unnerved that he had disobeyed him by leaving the headmaster’s office.

“He went back to his dorm to get ready for classes. Now tell me, Severus, who are you entertaining?” Lucius questioned curiously as he cocked his head to one side.

Severus glared at him, “That is none of your concern. If you are well enough, you can Floo back to Malfoy Manor later this afternoon!” And he stormed out of the guest bedroom, ignoring Lucius’ chuckling.

Severus swooped back into his bedroom, muttering and cursing and unaware that he had an audience. “Ahem, Severus. What is wrong?”

He stopped mid-stride, seeing that Hermione had her head propped up on the bed, and had been watching him the whole time. “How much did you overhear?”

“Just what you were muttering. Really, Severus, have you even considered that Lucius could figure out that I am staying with you? Are you willing to take that chance?” she said as she dropped the bed sheet, revealing her nudity.

Severus coughed as he stared at her breasts. “H-h-hermione, we …damn!” he exclaimed as he pounced on her, knowing that she was right. “He better not dare to touch you; you are mine,” he growled before kissing her. His hands traveled everywhere, touching her most intimate places, making her squirm with pleasure.

His fingers traveled down her body, and he parted her inner folds, surprised to find her wet and ready for him. “Hermione? Have you been naughty?”

“Only for you, Severus,” she breathed softly in his ear. He fingered and stretched her, listening to her gasp and moan in pleasure.

She writhed in his arms, moaning. “More…Severus…please…I need…,” she cried out his name as she climaxed hard.

He gently pushed her back on the pillows, spreading her legs as he settled in between them. “Are you sure you want this, Hermione?” he asked her one more time, afraid that she would say no to him.

“Yes! Make me yours, Severus.” She tugged on his shoulders as he guided himself into her.

Pausing a bit, he murmured, “Relax, darling.” He felt her body relax before he moved to swiftly break her barrier. She cried out a bit as he murmured soothingly to her, trying to calm her. He stayed still, letting her get used to his size.

He felt her move after a while, and he picked up the pace. Her hands wrapped around his body as she panted heavily in his ear. Her legs widened more to accommodate him.

He kissed her neck, marking her as his. “So does this mean you agree to join me, Hermione? As a spy? I could teach you so much. The Dark Lord won’t know what hit him.”

“YES! I agree to join you in your quest as a spy. I’ve always wanted to work with you… and… love you… and want to possibly have a relationship with you as well?” she panted out as she felt her climax approaching

“I was hoping this wouldn’t be our last encounter, Hermione. I am doing this to keep you safe. You know this. Do you swear that you will help me then?” he murmured before nipping at her earlobe as he pounded into her.

“As I said before, yes, Severus Snape! Teach me everything!” Hermione practically screamed as they climaxed hard together. Severus, satisfied that he’d won the battle of wills between them, mentally patted himself on the back for a job well done.

Epilogue:

Hermione woke the next morning to the sound of Severus snoring in her ear. She wiggled around a bit, only to find herself being drawn back into his embrace. What have I gotten myself into? Agreeing to become a spy, Hermione? Just great! You were supposed to talk him into not giving up on the light side, she thought irately as he woke up, applying kisses to her neck.

“Good morning,” he murmured sleepily, nuzzling her neck.

“Severus, couldn’t this jeopardize your position, and mine? I mean, I was supposed to win you back!” She pouted a bit before he kissed her on the lips.

“Darling, I’ve always been on the Light side. I know how to play my part well,” he whispered softly in her ear.

Her eyes widened in surprise as he admitted that to her. “But what are we going to do about Lucius? Won't he suspect?”

He snorted and replied, “I seriously doubt that. He has just broken out of Azkaban prison and is holed up here. I think he is trying to find out who I’m keeping here, but not to hurt me.”

Draco entered the sitting room to find his father pressing his ear up on the door, listening in on Severus’ conversation.

“Father! You shouldn’t be out of bed!” Draco scolded him lightly as he helped him back on the couch.

“I found out who he has in his rooms, Draco. It's Hermione Granger.”

“How did you find out?” Draco asked as he stared at the red dress hanging over the couch that his father was sitting on. Seeing the evidence of the dress, plus his father's sneaky position, Draco sighed.

“I suppose Uncle Severus has his reasons. Let's get you home, Father, before he finds out you were eavesdropping!” Draco exclaimed as he gathered his father’s things before activating the Floo

Lucius left a little thank you note on Severus’ desk before leaving with Draco.

An hour later, the couple emerged from their bedroom, noticing that the quarters were quiet, too quiet. “I’ll check the guest room,” Severus whispered as he swiftly walked to the guest bedroom to find its occupants gone.

“Severus!”

“Hermione, what is it love?” Severus asked worriedly as she handed him the note.

Severus,
Your secret is safe.
Lucius

Severus breathed a sigh of relief as he sat in his chair. “Hermione, I know you wanted to win this battle of wills, this contest between us, but would you settle for a tie?” he asked with a grin on his face.
