| Alan as Col. Christopher Brandon - Quote :
- Synopsis: Two sisters search for love and marriage in early 19th Century England.
This beautiful movie is one of the best film adaptations of any book I've had the pleasure of viewing.
It contains everything one expects from the genre: the gently rolling countryside, the genteel women, the dashing men. However, this is not by any means a PBS-style adaptation or just another "corset movie". The score is by Patrick Doyle. The cast is perfect, each actor personalizing each character, and I was pleasantly surprised to find Robert Hardy (who seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself) among the cast. What makes this film exceptional is the interaction between the characters, a trademark of director Ang Lee's work.
Rickmaniacs and non-'maniacs will adore the sad and reserved Colonel Brandon who becomes the happy and resplendent Col. Brandon by the end of the movie. Managing to steal the movie (again!), Mr. Rickman's performance has been compared to Trevor Howard's in Brief Encounter. http://www.rickmanistareview.com/sense/sense.html | |
